BAYSIDE, NY – At least $1 million is being made available for projects in Bayside, and residents are being asked to decide how to spend it.
City Councilman Paul Vallone launched district 19's fourth year of participatory budgeting on Tuesday, allowing everyone over the age of 16 to suggest projects they want to see funded.
The cash can be used for improvements on anything from schools to streets to parks to community spaces, Vallone told Patch.
"Participatory budgeting has opened up a wonderful new world of student participation and community participation," Vallone said. "We hold meetings throughout the year in all different sections of the community to develop them."
Vallone said his office will soon release the dates and times of this year's neighborhood assemblies to discuss local needs and brainstorm how to address them. Anyone 16 years and older who wants to submit their idea can do so at one of the neighborhood assemblies or through an interactive map online.
More than 50 project ideas have already been received online, ranging from sport and exercise equipment upgrades for local parks to technology upgrades for public libraries, Vallone said.
After collecting the ideas, volunteers develop them into concrete proposals and put them up to a public vote to decide which projects will be funded.
Past projects funded include a new music studio for Bayside High School, technology upgrades for the Whitestone Library, neighborhood NYPD security cameras and auditorium upgrades for P.S. 169 Bay Terrace School, Vallone said.
"You only have to be 16, so now you're getting students that have never voted on anything in their life before saying, 'Wow, I can get a music studio in my school if I go vote, and get my friends to vote, and get my family to vote.'"
Vallone credits that for the district's spike in voter participation over the last three years. Votes in District 19 doubled from 3,000 to 6,000 since the program started, making it the highest voter turnout in Queens - and third highest in the state - for the last two years, he said.
"What we did was create a district that's now involved," Vallone said. "You don't want kids growing up thinking, I don't have to vote. You want them to vote."
